FORCE MAJEURE FT: DIRTYLOUD

Friday 15 June 2012
Doors open 10pm
AMBAR – 104 MURRAY STREET, PERTH

WOW – wasn’t the Friday the 13th party ft Doctor Werewolf, just MADNESS?! Prepare
yourselves, Force Majeure is back with one of the freshest acts in dance music today; DIRTYLOUD.

Consistently competing with, and frequently out-selling, Deadmau5 and Skrillex in music Charts, a DIRTYLOUD live show is a heady combo of slamming dubstep, jacking electrohouse and stadium drum’n’bass. Mixmag UK heralded DIRTYLOUD as the ‘VIP’ act for 2012. Yeah, boi. Checkit: #1 in all genres on Beatport (most notably Dubstep and electro house), massive remix discography, 115,000+ Facebook ‘likes’, more than one million Soundcloud plays, and over one million views on YouTube. Respect, huh?

Supporting the Brazilian is the cream of the Force crop: Kill Dyl is back after his latest release on Plasma Digital and the launch of his blog Elektrik Essentials, he’s ready to drop some bombs!

Beatsmack and FTW are joining ‘Forces’ for a very special ‘vs’ set showing off what both acts
have in common (and what sets them apart!).

Newcomers Hammer & Tongs will be opening things up and the Force Majeure himself, Philly Blunt will be warming things up for DIRTYLOUD – perfect given he supported them around the country on their last Australian tour.

Bring your game face and get ready to throw down!

Interview with THE TAPEHEADS

Posted by Miranda. No Comments

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE TAPEHEADS?

TRUTH IS, WE NEVER PLANNED FOR ANYTHING TO HAPPEN. WE WERE AT MULLALOO ON A SUNDAY SESSION AND IN OUR STATE SIGNED UP FOR THE DJ COMP. AFTER ONLY LEARNING THE BASICS TWO WEEKS BEFORE HAND, WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD LAUGH. WE ENDED UP COMING THIRD AND SCORED A CLUB GIG BEING, LOVE SATURDAYS @ BAR OPEN WHICH OPENED OUR EYES UP TO THE CLUB SCENE, BEING FRESH EIGHTEEN YEAR OLDS. WITH OUR NEWLY DISCOVERED PASSION WE PUT OUR HEARTS, MINDS AND MONEY INTO GETTING WHAT WE NEEDED. THIS CARRIED ON & AS WE PROGRESSED WE REALISED WE HAD BY MISTAKE FOUND OUR NICHE IN SOCIETY, ALTHOUGH WE NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD SHAPE OR IMPACT OUR NEAR FUTURE AS MUCH AS IT HAS.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME?

AFTER ENTERING THE CLUB SCENE WE REALISED WE NEEDED TO ACQUIRE A NAME TO PRESENT OURSLEVES, BEING THE KIDS WE ARE & BORN IN THE 90’S, WHILE NOT KNOWING WHAT GENRE WE BEST LIKED WE FOUND OUR SETS BEING FULL OF OLD TRACKS, SINGALONGS AND RECOGNISABLE MELODYS WITH AN ELECTRO BASS TWIST. THEREFORE COMING UP WITH THE IDEA THAT THE TRACKS WE ARE LAYING WERE FIRST BROUGHT OUT ON TAPE, THAT BEING SAID, WHILE THE BASS WE’RE THROWING DOWN WAS DESTROYING OURS AND EVERYONES HEADS, IN CONCLUSION CREATING THE TAPEHEADS!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC TO PUNTERS THAT HAVEN’T HEARD YOU BEFORE?

OF LATE WE HAVE FOUND A CERTAIN STYLE WHICH COULD POSSIBLY BE DESCRIBED AS ELECTRO DRUMSTEP, INCORPORATING THE ELECTRONIC HIGHS, SPEED AND INTENSITY OF DRUM AND BASS AND THE WOBBLE AND GRUNGE OF DUBSTEP. ALL IN ALL, WE LOVE HEAVY BASS, EXOTIC MONOLOGUES AND FEEL GOOD MELODIES AT THE SAME TIME IT RIPS OUT YOUR EYES AND SCREAMS IN YOUR FACE.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MIXING AND PRODUCING NOW?

WE BOTH LEARNT HOW TO MIX OVER THE SUMMER OF 2008 ALTHOUGH IT WASN’T UNTIL LATER THAT YEAR WE GOT OUR HANDS ON OUR VERY OWN SETUP, WHICH GOT THE BEAT ROLLING. UNTIL A FEW MONTHS AGO AFTER PLAYING OUR FIRST FEW GIGS AT AMBAR AND SHAPE, WE REALISED THAT BEING ABLE TO PLAY OUR OWN TRACKS WOULD BE SO MUCH MORE SATISFYING.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR YOU IN THIS PARTICULAR MUSIC INDUSTRY?

OUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE SO FAR WAS ALSO OUR BIGGEST LEARNING CURVE. AT ONE OF OUR FIRST BAR OPEN GIGS WE ROCKED UP CONFIDENT WITH A LOAD OF UNDERGROUND MUSIC TO BLOW EVERYONE AWAY, THE FIRST FEW TRACKS WORKED WELL BUT OVER TWO SONGS WE LOST ALL THE GIRLS, WHICH LOST MOST THE LADS, TURNING A PUMPING CLUB INTO A SUNDAY ROAST AT NANNAS. LOOKING UP FROM THE DECKS WE SAW THE HARSH REALISATION THAT WE WERENT PLAYING TO OUR MATES IN A BACKYARD PARTY BUT A WHOLE GROUP OF DIFFERENT AND DIVERSE PEOPLE THAT WE HAD NEVER MET, WHO HAD COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TASTES IN MUSIC. A NEW CROWD MEANT PROVIDING MUSIC TO ENTERTAIN EVERYONE AND ANYONE, LEADING ONTO UNDERSTANDING THE ASPECTS OF PLAYING IN A CLUB. THANKFULLY THE MAN HIMSELF RICHIE G GRUNDY, WHO WAS RUNNING THE NIGHT, JUMPED UP AND TAUGHT US A LESSON WE STILL APPLY TO EVERY GIG, THAT READING THE CROWD AND PREPARATION ARE THE KEY INGREDIENTS TO A SUCCESSFUL SET.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR IN YOUR MUSIC?

BEING WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW. FROM BEING IN THE MOSH PIT WATCHING OUR FAVOURITE DJ’S TO NOW STANDING IN THEIR PLACE AND BEING THE ONES BEHIND THE DECKS. WE WOULD SHAKE HANDS & SET A DATE THAT WE WANTED TO BE PLAYING AT THAT PARTICULAR VENUE OR EVENT, IN TRUE FORM & TOO OUR OWN SURPRISE WE SMASHED WHAT WE THOUGHT WE WERE CAPABLE OF. RECENTLY PLAYING AT CREAMFEILDS AND SUPPORTING THE LIKES OF DESIGNER DRUGS, PHETSTA & BART B MORE, EVERYDAY IS AN ACHIEVEMENT. WHEN IT COMES TO ACHIEVEMENTS FROM OUR MUSIC, NOTHING BEATS PLAYING A BANGER SET AT YOUR FAVOURITE CLUB WHILE YOUR BEST MATES JUMP AROUND, IT’S DEFINATLEY OUR BIGGEST MOTIVATION.

IF YOU HAD TO CATEGORIZE THE MUSIC YOU PLAY, WHAT GENRE WOULD YOU BEST FIT?

HAVING A DIVERSE TASTE IN ALL FORMS OF MUSIC IT DOESN’T HELP US STICK TO A GENRE, OUR LOVE FOR HARD ELECTRO, DUBSTEP, DRUM & BASS, GLITCH HOP & MOOMBAHTON MAKE EACH SET DIFFERENT. SOMEHOW WE HAVE ADAPTED TO THE COMBINATION OF THEM ALL & GENERALLY LIKE TO SWITCH BETWEEN, WHICH SEEMS TO WORK NO MATTER THE STYLE OF EVENT. TO US, ITS ALL ABOUT THE BASS YOU FEEL IN YOUR CHEST, UNCONTROLLABLY THROWING YOUR HEAD BACK AND FORTH, THE DIRTY GRIND AND FILTHY FUNKY BEAT THAT COMES OUT OF NOWHERE. IN A NUTSHELL YOU WOULD DESCRIBE THE MUSIC WE PLAY, ELECTRO GLITCH-STEP IF THAT EXISTED.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE TAPEHEADS IN 2012?

THIS YEAR WE INTEND TO MAKE SHIT HAPPEN. WITH GIGS PICKING UP OF RECENT, MUSIC IS ALL WE’RE FOCUSED ON, WITH THE HOPE TO SUPPORT SOME MORE INTERNATIONALS AND PLAY ANOTHER FESTIVAL, ALSO SPENDING COUNTLESS HOURS IN THE STUDIO TO “FIND THAT NEW SOUND”, AS WELL AS STARTING OUR OWN NIGHT SOMEWHERE MAGIC IN PERTH. WE HAVE SOME PROJECTS ON THE GO BUT ITS EARLY DAYS, YOU’R JUST GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE.

IS THERE AN ARTIST YOU WANT TO WORK WITH THAT YOU HAVE NOT YET HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH?

WE HAVE MANY ARTISTS THAT WE DRAW A LOT OF OUR INSPIRATION FROM, IT WOULD BE DOPE TO GET INTO THE STUDIO WITH A HEAVY WEIGHT LIKE ANDY C OR BUSY P, THE KINGS OF ELECTRO AND DRUM & BASS. THEN, TO BE ON STAGE WITH ARTISTS LIKE CHASE & STATUS OR MODESTEP, THE VIBE THAT AMPLIFIES DURING THEIR PERFORMANCES AND THE INTENSITY THEY CREATE WOULD BE AMAZING TO BE A PART OF, THEY OUTLINE WHAT WE WANT TO PROVIDE FOR THE WORLD ONE DAY.

DOES ANYONE IN PARTICULAR INFLUENCE OR INSPIRE YOU?

TAKING THE CAKE, HANDS DOWN, NO COMPETITION, WOULD BE KARL THOMAS (SHOCKONE). HAVING MET AND SPENT TIME WITH HIM WE RESPECT HOW HE IS A GENUINE LAD AND HAS NOT LET HIS STATUS IN THE INDUSTRY TURN HIM SOUR. A PERTH BOY TO NOW BE ON THE WORLD MAP, THAT’S WHAT INSPIRES US. HE TOLD US WHEN HE WAS GETTING STARTED, AMONGST RUNNING PIZZA’S AND LIVING SKINT HE WOULD SPEND HOURS OF EVERYDAY JUST IN THE STUDIO NUTTING IT OUT. NOT ONLY THAT, HE’S AN AMAZING PERFORMER, DJ & PRODUCER AND WE FIND OUR ARTIST INSPIRATION IN HIM FOR ALL THOSE REASONS.

ANY LAST WORDS, PRESS KIT OR SHOUT OUTS TO YOUR FANS?

WE ARE STILL FRESH TO THE SCENE, BUT WERE TOO PASSIONATE TO STOP ANYTIME SOON, AS LONG AS WE GOT OUR MATES THERE AND BANGER CLUBS TO SMASH IT, WE’LL CONTINUE WALKING THIS YELLOW BRICK ROAD WHEREVER IT TAKES US. BIG UPS TO THE LADS & LADIES FOR THEIR SUPPORT, THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE, AND TO THE PEOPLE OF PERTH THAT JUMP AROUND TO THE BEATS WE LOVE. OUR FOLKS FOR PUTTING UP WITH MANIC BASS IN THE KITCHEN AND OUR EARLY MORNING ARRIVALS, IT’LL PAY OFF ONE DAY. KENNY L, ALEX TATE AND PHILLY BLUNT FOR PUTTING US UP AT GIGS, AND BLINDLY HELPING US DISCOVER OUR PASSION, WE THANK-YOU.

& IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHO WE ARE, AND HAVEN’T ANY CLUE WHAT WERE ON ABOUT… THIS MAY GIVE YOU A FAIR IDEA!

THE TAPEHEADS.

The tour will hit up Perth, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne so wherever you are prepare yourself for the invasion of one of the hottest Drum and Bass labels on the scene.

AEPH

Inspired by different music genres, Simone “Aeph” was compelled to make his own music and has released on a number of most cutting edge record labels. The “Aeph” sound is a dark melodic mixture of classic composition and surrealistic synthesizers, a retro futuristic vision of music combined with ultra modern riffs, great versatility and a finesse that rivals his role models.
“Aeph is on path for greatness! Mind blowing tunes with super tight production. Putting more BAD into Bad Taste.”

BLOKHE4D

Blokhe4d is the collaborative project between Michael “Vegas” (formerly of Bad Company UK) alongside US-born Jonas “Uman”. The project merges drum and bass, dubstep and electro with their own brand of techno, disco and house in an explosive manner releasing regularly only on Bad Taste Recordings, Hospital and occasionally others No stranger to the Australian D&B scene touring down under with Andy C and Also London Elektricity and others this time cementing themselves in further as part of their own label tour.

NEONLIGHT

Neonlight is the union of two different characters who grew up as childhood neighbours. During the 90′s they both began listening to different things – one techno and rock, the other ranging from metal to hip hop. By copying and experimenting with their favourite styles they got their first experiences in producing music.2003 saw the teaming together of the two and the birth of Neonlight before their first vinyl release in 2007 on Berlin based label “NoBreaks!” On this tour down under, Bad Taste pays tribute to their hard work.

PROLIX

With releases on leading labels such as Playaz, Metalheadz, Commercial Suicide, Ganja Tek, Project 51, Renegade Hardware, Viper, Integral, Project 51, Virus and Bad Taste, Prolix continues to push the sonic boundaries with his unique style across the drum & bass scene. 2012 is set to see prolix move even further forward in the scene with more releases on Bad Taste, his very own 12 on Commercial suicide as well as a special collab with Klute, tunes on project 51 and C4C recs, and a hotly anticipated EP on Playaz.

Posted by Miranda. No Comments

Inhibit presents CRISSY CRISS (UK)  3 HOUR SET!!!

We have a very special treat in store for y’all this Foundation Day as Inhibit takes full control of the famous AMPLIFIER BAR for the first time to present the one and only CRISSY CRISS for a no-holds-barred 3 HOUR SET! If you saw this man at Shape last year then you know why he is regarded as one of the best and most exciting DJs on the planet…

Support: VOLTRON / GRACIE & SISTYM / MASH B2B BASTIAN
MCs: ARMEE & SEEKA

Date: Sunday June 3rd @ Amplifier Bar (Foundation Day Long Weekend)
>> 8pm – 2am

Tickets $25+bf from www.moshtix.com.au and All Moshtix Outlets

The youngest DJ/Presenter at present to broadcast nationally on BBC Radio One. Crissy Criss began DJing at the early age of 9, taking every opportunity to get on his stepdad Kenny Ken’s turntables. With youthful persistence and natural talent, he landed a spot on London’s Kool FM at just 11 years old, staying there until early in 2004, when Radio 1 signed the 17 year old for their new show The Residency. He now hosts his own weekly 4 hour show on the 1Xtra. Meanwhile Crissy had been working on his production skills from the age of 13, and it wasn’t long before DJ Smokesta of Kool FM picked up on his talents, releasing “Hotshots” on his High Grade Music label only a year later, and the rest, as they say, is history. Two of the youngest upstarts from the underground scene Crissy Criss and Youngman hooked up when Youngman’s dad – Simon Bassline Smith– suggested they work together. A few cyberspace chats later and they were soon bouncing ideas off one another, culminating in a mere 3 hour studio session that lead to club smash “Take You Higher” Their partnership has culminated in “Give You The World” 18 tracks of blisteringly efficient dancefloor material spanning numerous genres.

It’s hard to imagine a more natural, fragile electronic album being released this year, recommended for fans of any genre. From Drum & Bass to dubstep and everything in between, Crissy Criss’s DJ sets are something to behold, there is a very good reason why he is regarded as one of the best DJs in the world!

IM FIGURE (Exclusive Interview)

Posted by Miranda. No Comments

Starting out as a turntablist in the small town of Evansville, IN, Figure has quickly emerged as an early pioneer in a flourishing Electronic Dance Music movement. With chart topping releases on labels such as Ultra, Play Me, Heavy Artillery, as well as overwhelming response from his free download series through his DOOM MUSIC imprint, Figure’s diverse music catalog is sought out by everyone from local music lovers to mainstream arena DJs. Each monstrous release gives rise to a rapidly growing fan base eager for his next bass line evolution. Beatportal writes, “Small-town producer Josh Gard has had a long history in music, but lately he as been rapidly rising up the ranks of all things bass. Just a few short years ago he donned the name of Figure and began making electro house, and he has since become a regular name in the realms of dubstep and drumstep. Scoring positions in Beatport’s top ten charts may have gotten him recognition, but a fantastic amount of praise has been raining down on him lately as some of the leading artists in electronic music have valued his live performance skills as some of the best in the business. It’s those kind of endorsements that load up Figure’s tour calendar and make him a moving target that’s hard to put crosshairs on…”

We’re proud to announce that Figure has joined the Creamfields lineup for 2012.Figure has quickly emerged as a leader of the bass movement with his innate ability to create huge crowd pleasing sounds, and his constant release of new and FREE singles. For more about this rising artist visit http://imfigure.net or grab the latest goodies at http://free.imfigure.net before catching a show.

Why the name Figure?

A: It’s something I just randomly came up with a long time ago – it stuck over all the other ideas I had, so I kept it! I still don’t remember exactly what it meant at the time though!

How long have you been producing now and how did you get into it?

A: I’ve been producing since I was 16-17. I used to make heavy hiphop stuff with big drums and slowed down samples. Then, I got introduced to Prodigy and Chemical Brothers… all that stuff just pulled something out of me and I rolled over to the EDM side. I still listen to and make hiphop stuff to this day, though.

Who are your major influences at the moment?

A: Well, I really don’t pull many influences from my own musical culture. The more movies I watch and video games I play, the more ideas I get. It seems visuals pull more out of me than sounds.

You have collaborated with some really talented true pioneers in the dubstep/bass genre, are there any more producers or artists you want to collaborate with?

A: I’d love to collab with Pusha-T or Daft Punk!

How do you feel about the ever-diversifying Drumstep scene in the U.S.A and
its different subgenres?

A: To me it’s all just sounds at certain speeds, the whole genre thing is semantics. I honestly
would love for that term to fade away and people just refer to all things heavy as Bass Music,
because when you look at it like that, everything is so much bigger and sort of unlimited. Kind of like how old people just hear edm and always call it techno. “Techno” is what it is to them, and thats amazingly simple.

At the same time, I can see how genre labels are important to help people find music, but I don’t
think about it so much when I’m making music.

Either way, its blowing up and its very exciting to be a part of.

Besides Monsters of Drumstep Volume series, can we expect any more mix
tapes or releases from you in the near future?

A: Yes, I have a lot of new music done right now and we are figuring out how we are going to drop it all. Ive been making so many new types of sounds and tracks that I really want to just get it all out, so whatever comes next can see the light of day as soon as possible.

Could you please tell us more about this full album of yours “Mission of
Destruction” that will be released in Spring/Summer 2012?

A: The album actually isn’t going to be a typical single release. I decided I didn’t like the idea of an album right now. I’m taking all the music I finished for the ‘album’ and splitting it into new series and volumes.

Is Creamfields festival your first time to tour Australia? If so, what are you
looking forward to do and explore in our country?

Yep- it’s my first time in Australia! Im looking forward to so so so much here. I have 4 days off in the middle of the run, that’s when I really want to dive into the local scene and see where it takes me.

What can we expect from your set at Creamfields festival?

A: High energy bass music of all sorts. Mostly my own music, mixed with some other peoples music I’m feeling right now.

What are your current 5 top tracks?

…how about albums/ep’s?

1. The new M Machine’s EP is amazing.

2. I still have Machinedrum’s album ‘Room(s)’ on repeat

3. E-40 just released a series of 3 album/singles .. Those are always cranked in my car.

4. The new Jack White album

5. And last but not least, Noah D’s album ‘Perspective’. He hit the nail on the head with this one, I
highly highly recommend it.

Any last words or shout outs?

I’m just excited for this whole tour run, international trips are always a wild hoot!

NEXT HYPE @ Bassnotion

Posted by Miranda. No Comments

Bassnotion is proud to present its first Next Hype party…

Next Hype featuring Pariah and Blawan

————————

BLAWAN

Jamie Roberts aka Blawan, a hotly tipped producer from Sheffield who came out of nowhere last year with his debut release, Fram/Iddy, for game changers Hessle Audio. But for him it didn’t feel like that…one of the latest virtuosos to emerge from Britain. His hyper-percussive maxis for R & S received unanimous praise from the press and suddenly turned the alias for this Yorkshire acid head into the category of next big thing. He has already remixed for Radiohead and his song “Getting Me Down” was named Resident Advisor’s best single of 2011

PARIAH

Pariah is 22 year old producer Arthur Cayzer. Originally from Scotland, Arthur is now based in London where he studies at university. Having always been hugely passionate about music, at the beginning of 2009 he made his first steps into production and DJ’ing. 2010 saw the release of his debut 10″ single “Detroit Falls/Orpheus” on the newly revitalised label, R&S, to which he is signed. That was followed up a few months later with a 6 track EP entitled “Safehouses”. As of February 2011, Arthur has a number of releases planned for the year, including a collaborative EP with a fellow producer. He has also begun work on his debut album which will come out at some point on R&S in the not too distant future.”

Hailing from Perth the epicenter of the Australasian drum and bass scene and now based in London, UK, ShockOne aka Karl Thomas is fast becoming one of D&B’s major talents.
2009 has seen Shockone come of age with the release of ‘The Shockone EP’, featuring the chart topping ‘Polygon’. This tune received major air play world wide with high rotation play listing on Australia’s Triple J radio and Radio 1′s Annie Mac penning it as ‘The biggest drum and bass tune out’. The EP’s three drum and bass tunes achieved the top 3 spots on beatports drum and bass chart, and ‘Adachigahara’s Theme’ stayed at number 1 on the dubstep chart for over a month, subsequently being voted as beatports number 1 all time classic dubstep tune. Following this Shockone released his remix of the Brookes Brothers epic ‘Crackdown’ on Viper recordings ‘Acts of madmen LP’ which was labeled “Album of the Week” on Zane Lowe BBC Radio 1. Shockone’s collaborations with Phetsta, ‘The Sun 2009′ and ‘Cyclones’ have also received high rotation on radio world wide.
2009 also saw Shockone take out Best tune of the year at the Perth dance music awards for the third year running with ‘Polygon’, as well as best drum and bass dj and best broken beat producer for the second year in a row.
2010 could best be described as the year of the remix for Shockone. His remix discography reading like a who’s who of drum and bass and electronic music in general: Brookes brothers – Crackdown, Netsky- I Refuse, Bcee – Help You, Chicane – Come Back, Cutline – Die For You, Mutya Buena & Agent X – Fallin, all receiving major DJ and radio support worldwide. 2010 also brings the release of the highly anticipated Shockone – ‘Re-fix’ EP, a collection of VIP’s and remixes of the massively successful ‘Shockone EP’.
Shockone is currently completing production on his debut LP due out for release early 2012. This long awaited solo album is sure to push boundaries, cross genres, max the envelope and so on.
With his tracks being aired frequently by the scenes biggest hitters such as Andy C, Hype, Friction, High Contrast and Matrix + Futurebound, it is only a matter of time before you find yourself rocking out to Shockone!

METRIK
Metrik (aka Tom Mundell) is fast becoming one of the most talked about names in drum and bass. For someone relatively new to the scene, his unique style and production have quickly marked him out as a name to watch in 2011 and beyond. When Mixmag exclaim “if there was one artist putting his hand up to be the next Sub Focus, Metrik could well be that man”, it’s time to sit up and take notice.
Back in 2007 Metrik released the anthemic soulful refrain of ‘Your World’ on Intrinsic Recordings, it was this which captured the attention of some of the scenes biggest names from Bad Company and Pendulum to Fresh and London Elektricity. It was to become arguably one of the biggest tracks of the year and lead to Tom being contacted by Futurebound and being signed to Viper where he is now a key player on the label.
The following year, Metrik released his first single on Viper – the epic ‘Moving On’ / ‘Stranger’ which was to become his second single to reach number one in the download charts. The end of that year saw Metrik unleash the huge ‘Technicolour’ which received major radio support from the likes of Zane Lowe, Hugh Stephens, Annie Mac and Colin Murray as well as all of the heavyweight drum & bass DJs. This culminated in Radio 1′s poignant use of the track as a sound bed on their coverage of Barrack Obama’s victory speech on Colin Murray’s show to breathtaking effect. The pace quickened somewhat in 2009 with a run of devastating releases, including ‘True Believer’ (a collaboration with Australian stars, Shock One and Phetsta), ‘Your World’ (once again a Beatport chart No.1) and Metrik’s take on the timeless rave bomb ‘Anthem’ (championed by High Contrast, The Utah Saints and Brookes Brothers to name but three). The year then ended with an almighty bang as ‘Forward Approach’ and ‘Sunset’ appeared on the acclaimed Viper Recordings ‘Acts Of Mad Men’ artist album (Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 Album of The Week).
This however, was just the beginning. With ‘Lightspeed’, the lead single from Viper’s huge ‘Drum & Bass Summer Slammers 2010’ and Metrik’s debut extended play ‘The Departure EP’ (including club anthem ‘T-1000’) being hammered by everyone from Andy C, to Friction, to Pendulum.
2011 has proved to be Metrik’s true breakout year, taking him to new heights in the world of drum & bass. Starting with the smash #1 hit collaboration with Futurebound, ‘Brave New World’ and ‘Sabotage’ (both hitting #1 on Beatport’s D&B chart!), followed by ‘Sunset 2011′ on Matrix & Futurebound’s ‘Worldwide: 001″ LP, and ‘More Than Words’ on Viper’s second annual ‘Drum & Bass Summer Slammers 2011′ album. Now to cap off the year, Metrik releases his most complete work to date, the epic ‘Between Worlds EP’ featuring ‘T-2000′, ‘Genesis’, ‘I See You (ft. Kathy Brown)’, ‘Between Worlds’, and ‘Nightdrive’ (which you can download for free below!). Metrik – Nightdrive by UKF Music
As a DJ, Metrik has worked passionately to craft a name for himself behind the decks with his energetic, uplifting and euphoric sets incorporating styles from across the spectrum of dancefloor drum & bass.
With his name on the lips of the worlds biggest DJ’s, Metrik is much in demand as remixer, being the first port of call for artists such as Eric Prydz, Sasha, Stanton Warriors, Camo & Krooked, Funkstar Deluxe & Skepta who have called upon him looking for a fresh and innovative take on their biggest tracks.

PHETSTA
Phetsta burst onto the Drum & Bass scene in 2005 when he signed exclusively to the legendary Simon Bassline Smith’s imprint Technique Recordings. The Australian producer quickly stamped a name for himself within the genre with his early releases. These included his first extended player ‘The Congo EP’ which cracked the UK Drum & Bass top 10 sales charts, Knowledge Magazine calling it “a production masterpiece”.
After tours of USA and Europe and a string of singles all touching down in the Beatport top 10 Phetsta began collaborating closely with fellow Perth producer Shock One in 2008. The resulting tracks ‘The Sun’ and ‘Cyclones’ won them the ‘best tune’ award at the PDMA’s and a top 3 placing on Triple J’s Super Request respectively. After a tour together in Europe they dropped their next single ‘The Sun 2009′ along with an official video clip. The response was immense, the track gained day time high rotation and is still being aired today. In 2010 Phetsta set to work on his second extended player. In the meantime he took out another PDMA for ‘best tune’ with his dubstep remix of Shock One’s ‘True Believer’ on Viper Recordings, even gaining ‘Essential Mix’ support from the live drum & bass juggernaut Pendulum.
As 2011 rolled in Phetsta dropped his long awaited ‘Prism EP’. With a keen eye for the dance floor and production levels that are second to none, The Prism EP delivered across the BPM’s, serving up full-throttle drum & bass alongside some gorgeous dubstep excursions. The four tracks stormed all of the major download charts. In particular Phetsta’s collaboration with Mad Decent vocalist Reija Lee ‘Run You Down’ made major waves in the dubstep scene. The day it hit youtube it was the 6th most viewed music video overall, and 40th overall. Both ‘Run You Down’ and the title track ‘Prism’ peaked in the Beatport top 3, ‘Run You Down’ charting in the the top 10 for two months straight alone.
Later in 2011 he collaborated with ShockOne on the track ‘Crucify Me’. The two part monster of a single helped them become the first artist ever to top both the Track It Down D&B and dubstep charts simultaneously. It held onto the Beatport Drum & Bass top spot for six weeks straight and again received daytime radio play.
Phetsta has also completed a string of remixes for Those Usual Suspects through One Love / Sony Australia, Bombs Away on Universal Australia, bass label Never Say Die and the legendary D&B powerhouse Hospital Recordings. Phetsta’s music has received DJ support from Pendulum, Skream & Benga, TC, Rusko, Richard Kingsmill and Zane Lowe.

Interview: Downlink’s a Bass Technician

Posted by Miranda. No Comments

Downlink has been punishing dancefloors all over the planet with his heavy brand of bass. With roots in Jungle & DnB, he is no stranger to the vile side of subsonic dance music. Downlink has set out to explore a frantic, adrenaline fuelled style, influenced by everything from heavy metal to astrophysics. He is a Rottun Recordings regular, but has also released on the biggest labels in the game like Mau5trap and OWSLA. While consistently coming up with sick material time after time, he has gained DJ support from all of the biggest names in the scene. His successes on the Beatport charts have been extraordinary. He managed to hold down 4 of the top 10 spots in dubstep at one time and has had multiple tracks hit #1 in both dubstep and drum n bass. Recently Downlink’s skills have landed him a prominent role in the production of legendary nu-metal band Korn’s tenth studio album. His keen ear for sound even led him to being given the honour of mixing the album. Along with friend and label mate Datsik, he toured America with the band and played to massive arenas, time and time again leaving crowds stunned with his energetic performance. Downlink is not one to be pigeon-holed and is constantly on a quest to evolve and refine his sound. With this in mind, one thing will always remain constant – a pure unadulterated heavy listening experience.

Downlink will be performing at Creamfields Festival on his 2nd tour to Australia, Teknoscape’s Miranda Raffaele caught up and had a chat with him about his music, future and views on the Dubstep production / scene.

First off, tell us how Downlink was formed?

It’s just a one man show so it was really just the evolution of my own personal musical style and experiences. In the 90′s I listened to grunge and metal and when I first got into electronic music around the year 2000 it was drum n bass. I have always been a sucker for a good guitar riff and the same goes for synth lines in bass music. If it sounds heavy and dirty and makes me want to flail around like a drunken fool then great. When I first heard dubstep I liked it, but not to go out and listen to at a club, more for just chilling out around the house. I started to hear producers applying the textures and attitude of dnb to dubstep and I knew I had to start producing it. I’d been fucking around with Reason and other audio programs for a few years but didn’t get really serious about production until around the time dubstep began catching on in Canada.

What artists are currently influencing you and your sound?

It’s hard to ignore Skrillex and the whole way he has influenced the heavy dubstep music scene. It seems a lot of kids go to these shows not having heard much dubstep besides Skrillex tunes and they seem to respond hard to that style and sound. Consequently you have a whole slew of artists that are basically doing their best to copy his sound and some of them are doing it with great results. I myself am fascinated by sound design and appreciate some of the technical aspects of Sonny’s style, so therefore I naturally have tried to recreate some of the sounds I’ve heard or try to put my own spin on them. But at the same time I don’t want to go over the edge with it, like I feel some artists have. I think its ultimately still important to make your own music and explore a unique style. I listen to so much music and draw in little things from all of it. Tipper is probably my all time favorite producer, just sayin.

As we all know Dubstep is getting more commercial and popular than ever, has this influenced you to change your music production in any way?

To some degree yes and to some degree no. I mean, with the tunes that I’m working on at the moment for my next release I definitely want to do a more musical vocal type of tune to appeal to the commercial side of things, but also I want to make a couple absolute filthy rinseout tunes that the real ‘heads’ can get on board with. I really don’t want to alienate my original fans too much when I evolve musically, but at the same time I always want to try to do new things.

You have collaborated with a lot of outstanding leading artists such as Excision, Datsik, KoRn, Antiserum etc, how do you think collaborations effect the evolution of an electronic music producer?

I think they are great in many ways because it leads to the sharing of ideas and styles. Everyone gains from a collaboration because you learn new things and pick up different stylistic approaches. Maybe one time someone will start a song with a really melodic intro and send it over to you to work on, while other times there will already be this monster bassline taking shape and you have to fill in the blanks. It’s all fun and all leads to new ideas and new approaches. Collaborations while both artists are in the same studio simultaneously working are often really special because each person can actually see the other working and pick up more specific techniques and tricks.

Are there any producers you would like to collaborate with in future?

There are many. Reso is one producer I respect a lot and would definitely work with given the chance. I definately want to continue working with my friends Excision & Datsik, and there will definitely be some Liquid Stranger, Bare, and Ajapai collaborations in the future.

You are currently signed to Excision’s label Rottun Recordings, how did you
managed that?

I first met Datsik on the dubstep forum and worked with him on a collab. We kept in touch and swapped tunes often. Datsik had been showing Excision my tunes and it wasn’t long before Ex figured they were Rottun material. We are all from the same part of Canada and now actually all live in the same city.

How do you feel about the ever diversifying Dubstep scene in the Canada and its different subgenres?

I think its great, but I am a little disappointed at the veiled snobbery that goes on between the non-bro and bro scenes. People go to these really deep “true dubstep” nights and get off on how original and different their music is and how its so deep, but when the subject of hard aggressive (brostep) dubstep comes up they thumb their noses. Mention Skrillex and their faces pucker up like they sucked on a rotten lemon. This kind of close-mindedness never would have spawned their “true dubstep” in the first place which is the hilarious thing about it all. Also, it seems like the people at the heavier more bro-step types of shows are all keen to listen to the deep stuff too. A lot of people I ask at my shows will start rattling off names like Coki, Mala, Digital myztiks, Youngsta etc… It shows how passionate they are about all forms of dubstep. Myself I’m a fan of all of it, but I prefer to listen to the really hard stuff when I’m out at an event.

You have uploaded this 74 minute heavily packed Dubstep free mixtape for people to download on your Soundcloud, can we expect anymore mix tapes or releases from you in the near future?

Yes there will be many more of the years. I’m going to try to put out a really insane mix atleast once a year, and maybe even drop a short mix midway through the year as well to keep people listening. As for releasing music I dont see that stopping for a long time.

As a very busy, active DJ and producer, you have been performing heavily all over the world, how different are the crowds and performances you do from country to country?

Well just tonight I played in Zurich to a crowd of metal heads at a Korn concert, while just 3 days ago I was playing to a room full of bass heads in Milwaukee. The response is obviously going to be be different depending on the crowd and who they are really there to see. At a Downlink show, it doesn’t really matter where I am, I usually get the crowd going pretty ape shit and dancing around and flailing about and what not. I’ve even seen some pretty raging moshpits which I think are fucking awesome at dance shows. At a show where I am supporting an act that does a different style of music, its definitely a tougher go. You can get them cheering and whatnot but for the most part they just don’t know how to react. They’re not used to bassface nor do they feel comfortable “letting go” when an alien sounding bassline emerges from the speaker to destroy their eardrums.

What can we expect from your set at Creamfields festival?

Pure fucking annihilation! I will be bringing it hard and heavy and I don’t give the crowd much of a chance to rest. Bring your best flail moves and bass face!

What are your current 5 top tracks?

Excision & Downlink – Headbanger

Downlink – Triphekta

Mark Instinct – Room Shaker

Bong – Hostile Enforcement

Krome & Time – The License (Doctor P RMX)

What can we expect from Downlink in 2012 and beyond?

I hope to be setting off my new record label soon and other than that just releasing more music and playing more shows!

Thanks so much for your time, any shouts or last words?

Shout out to my family and friends, and also to my fans all across the world. I love you all without you I am nothing.
